If no one identifies the Spy correctly, the Spy wins the round. This applies even if the other players have correctly worked out the location, as the group must name the actual Spy to stop them.
In a typical Spy game, players take turns asking one another questions about a secret location. The non-Spy players know where they are, while the Spy must listen carefully, answer convincingly and try to discover the location without revealing their role.
When the discussion ends, players usually vote for the person they believe is the Spy. If the vote points to an innocent player—or if nobody receives enough votes—the Spy remains undiscovered and claims victory.
Why the Spy Wins
The Spy’s main objective is not always to guess the location. They can also win simply by avoiding detection until the end of the round.
This means the Spy succeeds when:
- Players vote for the wrong person.
- The group cannot agree on who the Spy is.
- The vote is tied and the rules do not allow a deciding vote.
- Time runs out before the players make a correct accusation.
- Everyone suspects the Spy but chooses another player during the final vote.
For example, imagine the secret location is a football stadium. One player gives vague but believable answers, causing the group to accuse someone else. Even if several players suspect that person is acting strangely, the Spy wins as long as the final accusation is incorrect.
Can the Spy Still Guess the Location?
In many versions of the game, the Spy can attempt to guess the secret location at any time. If the guess is correct, the Spy wins immediately.
However, if the Spy does not guess the location—or guesses incorrectly—they may still win by surviving the final vote. That is why a good Spy often avoids making an early guess unless they are highly confident.
What Happens After the Round?
Once the result is revealed, all players usually disclose their roles and the secret location. This is often the most entertaining part of the game, as the group can see:
- Which answers made the Spy look suspicious.
- Who nearly exposed the Spy.
- Whether the Spy had correctly worked out the location.
- Why innocent players were wrongly accused.
The next round then begins with a new location and a newly selected Spy. In casual games, players can rotate the host role, keep a scorecard, or award points for Spy wins and successful identifications.
